←AED stands for Automated External Defibrillator, not automatic, which is a common misunderstanding. AEDs are designed to do one thing – identify and treat a specific type of electrical problem that prevents the heart from beating properly. This electrical condition is known as Sudden Cardiac Arrest (or SCA). It’s different and more severe type of heart attack, meaning time is of the essence. Sudden Cardiac Arrest (or SCA) is a malfunction in the heart that causes an irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia). This stops the heart from pumping and stops blood flow to the brain, lungs and other organs. With its pumping action disrupted, the heart can’t pump blood to the brain, lungs and other organs. It can cause death within minutes if the victim does not receive treatment. And the fastest way to treat an SCA is a shock with a defibrillator to help the heart regain function and beat normally.
